For the past 25 years, I have been fortunate enough to celebrate my birthday with family and friends. From delicious dinners, surprise concerts, mustache loft parties and more, you have all somehow managed to make my birthday special every year.

However, this year, I want to do something different.

On April 6th, 2011, I will turn 26 years old. Instead of asking for birthday presents, I'm asking all of you to help me raise $5,000 to build a freshwater well for people in developing nations.

Nearly 1 billion people in the world do not have access to clean and safe drinking water. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. 45,000 people will die this week alone.

In Africa, people spend 40 billion hours every year walking miles to the nearest water source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.

The time spent walking and the resulting diseases keep them from attending school, working and taking care of their families. It is this cycle that loops people and families into chronic poverty, preventing them from building the future of their communities.

charity: water is an organization that I believe is on the right track to helping communities break out of the cycle of chronic poverty by providing something that many of us take for granted every day; clean water.

Please join me and charity: water in raising $5,000 for the development of a freshwater well. I am asking for donations of $26 or more (equivalent to a few drinks/beers at the bar). This water project will provide clean and safe drinking water to an entire community of around 50 families or 250 plus people.

Also, on April 15th, 2011, I will be hosting a birthday party with raffle prizes and a silent auction to help raise additional funds for this project. I would love you see you all there.
