A few years ago, I learned that the world water crisis could be solved with a few billion dollars. That sounds like a lot.

Until I learned that every year, Americans spend much more than that on their pets alone. Crazy, huh?

I'm not sure how much gets spent on birthdays each year, but I'm sure it's a lot. Money spent on gifts that will never get used takes up a large percentage, I'm sure.

That's why I'm giving up my birthday. Every year I receive gifts, some that I use, some that I don't. Instead, I want to celebrate by giving others the gift of clean water.

It's the least I can do.
