I like getting birthday presents. But there's something I'd like getting this birthday, too. Instead of buying me a present, would you consider giving $5 towards providing someone with access to clean drinking water this year? How about giving $10? $20? Twenty-four (which so happens to be my age)?

If you average out one example of the drilling costs for a well in an impoverished region, $1 can provide one person with clean drinking water for a year. Just $20 can provide that same person with drinking water for a whole generation (20 years).

I've asked myself the question before, "what would I pay to get access to clean drinking water if all I had was tainted water that was making me chronically sick?" I'd probably be willing to pay upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. But I don't think about this to guilt myself, because I believe that guilt too often leads to inaction. Instead, I take it as an opportunity to realize that I *can* help a person in just such a situation.

So, if a sense of helplessness or futility (e.g. "how can my little gift solve this problem?) is holding you back, please don't let it. Every little bit has the potential to to give a person like you or me access to clean drinking water this coming year.

If you're able to help Charity: Water in their effort to provide access to clean drinking water this year, I hope you do it out of joy and a sense of purpose! Every little bit has the potential to make the difference.

And yes, I will be happy to receive the gift of knowing that YOU gave to provide SOMEONE (somewhere) with clean drinking water, all because it was MY birthday :)
